Top 5 Best Covered Litter Boxes
The kitty that started the quest to find the best covered litter box
I have been surrounded by cats all my life adopting my first calico kitty when I was 5 years old. I’ve lived in a mult-cat households ever since. However, it wasn’t until I adopted a special little black kitty that no one else wanted that I started to really pay attention to design and style of litter boxes.
This boy needed a covered litter box. He was the first cat I ever had that didn’t squat to do his business – despite being neutered. This cat’s bizarre method of elimination is what launched my quest to find the best covered cat litter box.
#5 Best Covered Litter Box – Omega Paw Self Cleaning Litter Box
The Omega Paw Self-Cleaning litter box is unique in that it is designed to make cleaning the litter quick and easy. The box measures in at 19.5″ x 22″ x 20″ – large enough to accommodate most cats. Although not truly self cleaning like some other motorized options on the market, the design of this covered litter box does make cleaning the litter box easier.
Simply and slowly rotate the box on it’s side. The litter enters the retractable container and sieve. The soiled litter stays in the retractable container while the remaining litter re-enters the box through the sieve. This video demonstrates proper use of this covered litter box.
It’s important to keep about 3″ of litter in the box and to use a clumping style cat litter. At only $31.99 on Amazon, with free shipping through Amazon Prime, this really is a great value and an excellent time saver.
#4 Best Covered Litter Box – Catit Jumbo Hooded Cat Litter Pan
The Catit Jumbo Hooded Cat Litter Box features a built in carbon filter which helps to cut down on odor along with a protective door which helps to keep litter in the pan. This covered litter box measures in at 22″ x 20″ x18″ which is large enough to accommodate most cats. Like a typical covered litter box, the large cover unsnaps for full access and easy cleaning. For a quick scoop and clean, you can simply pull the door back and scoop as needed.
The height of the box tapers up in the rear which is helpful in reducing urine seeping through if you have a cat who stands while urinating. Also, if you have a very tall cat, it’s helpful to simply leave the door off as it gives the cat some headroom to do his business. Check out this video below for a closer look at the Catit Jumbo Hooded Litter Box.
At only $29.34 on Amazon, with free shipping for Amazon Prime members, this litter box is a great value. It’s ideal for taller cats and the covered sides and back help to eliminate litter scatter.
#3 Best VALUE Covered Cat Litter Box – Petmate Jumbo Hooded Litter Box
The Petmate Jumbo Hooded Litter Box is probably one of the more popular covered litter boxes on the market. I’ve seen them sold in stores and they’re priced relatively inexpensively for the covered litter box variety. The Petmate Jumbo Hooded Litter box sells for only $25.34 on Amazon, with free shipping for Amazon Prime members (seriously, if you haven’t joined Amazon Prime, you should – it’s awesome).
The wall tapers high in the back which is helpful if you have a cat that stands while urinating. However, if you have a really tall urinator (like I do), you will find that this design fails to keep the urine in. In fact, it will end up traveling down the seam, drip out the sides and get caked in the locking mechanisms on the side – making it very difficult to clean.
The Petmate Jumbo Hooded Litter Box is a great option for a covered litter box if your cat squats to urinate. The covered design keeps odor down and litter scatter at a minimum. It’s easy to snap off the top for scooping and the smooth walls make cleaning easy. It’s also relatively close in price to your standard open top litter box. So for a few bucks more than a standard litter box, you can cut down on odor and litter scatter.
What do you do if you have messy cat urinators? The kind that pee like they’ve forgotten they’ve been neutered and they think they are marking their territory? Check out the #1 and #2 best covered litter boxes below.
#2 Best Covered Litter Box – Clevercat Top Entry Design
I thought for sure this would end my days of cleaning cat urine up from my cat who stands straight up while doing his business. Measuring in at 20″ x 15″ x 15″ this is one of the smaller covered litter boxes on the market. Maybe too small.
If you have one cat, and they’re not too big, this is a great covered litter box design. The top entry makes it virtually impossible to leak urine from the stand up and urinate variety of male cats. However this box was slightly too small for my 15 pound male kitty. It’s also a bit too small to accommodate more than a one cat household (unless you buy one for each cat).
The overall design of this box is great. The treading in the top really helps to cut down on litter tracking out of the box. The high walls virtually eliminate the chances of urine seeping out of seams. It’s easy to snap off the top for scooping and the smooth walls making cleaning this litter box easy. My only complaint? I wish they made a jumbo version to accommodate large cats and a multi-cat household.
#1 Best Covered Litter Box – The Kattails Kat Kave
This is the ultimate covered litter box. The best I have ever owned. And I’ve been living in a multi-cat household for more than 25 years so I’ve owned more than my fair share of covered litter boxes. This covered litter box is so good, it inspired me to make a blog about covered litter boxes.
This covered litter box is HUGE. Measures in at 28 1/4″ x 18 3/4″ x 20″. It’s tall enough to accommodate your beastly Maine Coone or plain old fat cat. The walls are tall all the way around virtually eliminating urine seepage from tall cats that stand while urinating. The smooth walls make it very easy to clean. The large size is perfect for a multi-cat household.
If you have a large kitty, he will have enough room to move around in there and do his business.
This covered litter box is made in the USA and is extremely durable. Before you balk at the price, you need to know that it really is made to last. This will be the last covered litter box you buy. The material is extremely sturdy – unlike your standard flimsy plastic variety litter boxes.
It’s designed by a young woman out of Wisconsin named Kim who came up with the idea out of sheer frustration at the lack of suitable litter boxes available on the market to suit her large Maine Coone kitties. At $150 plus shipping, the Kattails Kat Kave is not cheap, but you definitely get what you pay for and this is by far the best quality covered cat litter box I have seen and tested on the market.
